"Let us therefore come boldly unto the throne of grace, that we may obtain mercy, and find grace to help in time of need." Hebrews 4:16

Eternal Affairs

Man Praying in ChurchMany of us are not wealthy and we have little influence or status in this world. I’m sure that we have wished our lives were different and that we had more earthly advantages…I know I have.  That thought came again to my mind as I was studying the 20th chapter of Matthew where Jesus said to His disciples, “Whoever wants to be a leader among you must be your servant, and whoever wants to be first must become your slave.” Matthew 20: 26-27,

I realized what He was saying was that the greatest people in God’s Kingdom are those who have servants’ hearts, not those with worldly power, money or influence. “Let the brother of low degree rejoice in that he is exalted.” James 1:9

Upon reading Jesus’ words, we can feel very liberated in knowing that we don’t have to worry about impressing others with money or prestige. His words bring the hope that we can indeed influence people, but in ways that have nothing to do with this world.

We can count ourselves blessed and even grateful that God saw fit to make us “lowly” in the eyes of the world. I know He sees us much differently when we decide to cultivate a servant’s heart.

Heavenly Father, I pray for a servant’s heart that I might be about your business. Thank You for Your Word and for the Holy Spirit who lives in me bringing power and understanding that I may apply it to my life. In Jesus’ Name, Amen

The love of God. God's promised rainbow.
God’s Promise, The Rainbow

The love of God is greater far than tongue or pen can ever tell; It goes beyond the highest star and reaches to the lowest hell;

The guilty pair, bowed down with care, God gave His Son to win; His erring child He reconciled and pardoned from his sin.

O love of God, how rich and pure!  How measureless and strong!  It shall forevermore endure The saints’ and angels’ song.

When years of time shall pass away and earthly thrones and kingdoms fall,  When men, who here refuse to pray on rocks and hills and mountains call,  God’s love so sure, shall still endure all measureless and strong; Redeeming grace to Adam’s race— The saints’ and angels’ song.

Frederick M. Lehman wrote this song in 1917 in Pasadena, California. The lyrics are based on a Jewish poem and have been translated into at least 18 languages.

Here is what Frederick Lehman said: “One day, during short intervals of inattention to our work, we picked up a scrap of paper and, seated upon an empty lemon box pushed against the wall, with a stub pencil, added the (first) two stanzas and chorus of the song. Since the lines (3rd stanza from the Jewish poem) had been found penciled on the wall of a patient’s room in an insane asylum after he had been carried to his grave, the general opinion was that this inmate had written the epic in moments of sanity.”

(Frederick M. Lehman, “History of the Song, The Love of God,” 1948)

As Christians, we all want to be more like Jesus. One very good way to help us along that journey is speaking aloud His Word and applying it into our lives (Positive Affirmations). As I was having time with the Lord this morning, I spoke some of these things over my life as I read in the book of Proverbs. Speaking aloud the Word of God is very powerful. Using the Word to bless your family and your own life can stir the heart of God. He wants to bless us and what better way to receive His blessing than to speak His Word over our lives.

As we read Proverbs it’s helpful to remember what God says in 2 Corinthians 5:21, “God made him who had no sin to be sin for us, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” Keeping in mind that we are “the righteousness of God in Christ” will help us understand how God sees us as “blameless” because of what Jesus did for us on the cross and how He makes these affirmations come alive in our hearts and minds. We can begin from the moment our child or grandchild is born speaking the Word of God to them. And it’s never to late to begin reading it aloud to ourselves.

1.   I am a person of understanding and will hold my tongue. (Proverbs 11:12b)
2.   I am a trustworthy person and can keep a secret. (Proverbs 11:13b)
3.   I will commit to the Lord whatever I do and He will establish my plans. (Proverbs 16:3)
4.   I will not hold pride in my heart nor have a haughty spirit for pride goes before destruction and a haughty spirit before a fall. I will not fall. (Proverbs 16:18)
5.   I will avoid strife and quarreling. (Proverbs 19:3)
6.   I will not pay back a wrong for a wrong. I will wait for the Lord to avenge me. (Proverbs 20:22)
7.   I will not close my ears to the cries of the poor. (Proverbs 21:13a)
8.   I will pursue righteousness and love so that I may find life, prosperity and honor. (Proverbs 21:21)
9.   I will have a cheerful heart because it is good medicine. (Proverbs 17:22a)
10. I will fear the Lord that I may have a secure fortress and it will be a refuge for my children. (Proverbs 14:26)

Of course there are so many more affirmations and inspirations in the book of Proverbs but this list will be a start and perhaps you would enjoy searching out more of God’s Word to speak into the lives of your family. You may be surprised to find out what powerful changes God will make in your life when you do this one simple thing.

I AM the oldest book in existence, having outlived the storms of thirty centuries. Men have endeavored by every means possible to banish me from the face of the earth. They have hidden, torn, burnt, reviled and despised me, and have done to death tens of thousands of my faithful witnesses. Indeed no other book has been more bitterly hated, no other book has been more dearly cherished; no other book has been so misrepresented and misunderstood. Nevertheless, today, while many of my foes slumber in death, I still live on.

It is not for me to speak of the conflicting creeds laid to my charge, but on behalf of the one true purpose of my Revered Author, I appeal to reason. Look at the stately trees of the forest, the living green of the meadows bespangled by a thousand lovely flowers, the singing birds that delight themselves amid the beauties of nature, the blue dome of heaven, illumined by the sun, moon and stars that space out a universe too immense for man to fathom. And know that the Creator of these things has a wise and loving purpose equally great and beautiful on behalf of man. Here is revealed within my covers a chain of testimony, which gives evidence of a plan so broad and a design so deep as to be beyond the power or human origin.

My story centers around the dear Redeemer, who “by the grace of God tasted death for every man”. Based upon this atoning sacrifice, all the dead will be raised, and the whole earth made glorious with life and happiness everywhere, without a trace of sorrow, pain or death. My message has blessed every follower of Jesus. It has inspired them with hope, encouraged them to zeal, comforted them in sorrow and strengthened them in faith until they have laid down their all in death, awaiting their grand reward. Like the crystal springs from the mountain side which flow on and on to refresh the luxuriant verdure on the plain below, so in the glad day now dawning, the waters of truth will impart its life-giving blessings to the willing and obedient of humanity, who will forever with one sweet accord, praise, love and adore my Beloved Author.
